The opening of the climbing sector Vega Dopico located at 4km to the west of Viñales valley is a new and exclusive attractive of the region, with some really nice lines from 5.10c to 5.13a/b. To get there you have to go by the street to El Moncada and before the big hill that marks the end of the valley you have to turn to the right and follow a 300m trail that goes to the base of the wall which is oriented to the west and has a distinctive layer formation. Always ask to the farmers of the please for the Vega Dopico, everybody knows it. The best time for climbing there is in the morning time, the sun starts to heat the wall after 12pm.

This peculiar wall was bolted with the purpose of doing the first Flash Contest in the country, initially were 13 sport routes, but 5 days ago another one was open ªHace calor en Viñalesª a 5.10c opened by David Brow a Canadian friend who ads one more route to the list of the region.

For those who have climbed on the other sectors of the valley this will be something totally new. What to say about the grades, some people would say that the routes have half or maybe one grade less than what it really should have. Here you will face a lot of slopers formed between the horizontal layers who shaped the entire wall. The 5.11b and 11c are high recommended lines (Libre exprecion, Dinamicando and La Pandemia) are an excellent reference. Besides the lines for warming up muscles, there is also action for those who wants to try harder in this special rock” Se me cayo la tanga” 5.13a/b one of the most rigorous routes that I have bolted in the valley, one of those who doesn’t let you break when you start, it runs by the left of a not so overhanging edge, with some weird holds really hard to grab.

I’m not very sure but I think that we already count with more than 300 bolted lines, but what I can say for sure is that a lot of walls like this and even bigger are waiting for bolts to be open by those limestone fanatics hungry to set up new projects.
